Having studied art in New York since 1970, taught art there as a professor, established himself
as an artist, he is rather unfamiliar to the art arena of Seoul. But several exhibitions here have
proved him to be a prominent artist. Although he is a professional painter, his remarkable
intelligence can be seen from the career of his study in Yale School of Art and that of
his teaching in Visual Arts School.
His paintings feature vivid and powerful strokes so much for abstract works, dynamic contrast
of colors shown in the expression of details, wide open manipulation of the surface, and abstract
figures that remind one of various objets, added to originally abstract shapes, spots and traces of
scratches. Therefore it is not easy to define whether or not they are abstract paintings. Abstract
ellipses, irregular pentagons, lines and parabolas createa feeling of materialistic objets or certain
substances from the thick matiere and the sense of speed, rather than non-material, pure shapes
of abstraction.
김 웅(1944년생) 은 1969년 이후 뉴욕으로 건너가 스쿨 오브 비쥬얼 아트 미술대학 졸업, 뉴욕 (1976년) 예일대학교 미술대학원 졸업, 뉴 헤이븐, 코네티컷(1978년)에서 공부하고 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트 (1979-1987) 미술 교수로 철학적 사고를 겸비하신 지적감수성이 풍부한 화가입니다. 2004년 국내 성곡미술관(서울)의 개인전 이후 3년만에 예화랑에서 갖는 개인전은 그의 스물 여섯번째 개인전 입니다.
총 40점으로 크게 세 개의 카테고리로 구분됩니다. <체크 무늬로 피어진 꽃> <접시 위에 얼굴> <풍경과 나의 관계>가 그것입니다. 세 개로 나누어지는 이 연작들은 선생님께서 지금까지 보여 온 작품들과 극히 자연스럽게 연계되면서 더욱 무르익어 가는 자신의 내면세계를 반영해주고 있습니다. 이는 한 순간에 이루어지는 것이 아니라 무겁고 거친 붓질과 다독거리는 색층의 점진적인 반복에 의해 서서히 무르익어가는 형식입니다. 마치 농부가 밭을 갈듯이 꾸준하게 경작해가는 과정을 방불케합니다. 뉴욕의 하워드 스콧 (oward Scott) 갤러리에서18년 동안(1988년-2006년) 전속작가로 계신바 있으며, 현재는 뉴욕의 유수의 화랑에서 러브콜을 받고 있는 상태입니다. 세계미술시장이 주목하는 미국 뉴욕에서 열린 크리스티(Christie's) 경매(2006년 9월21일) 에서도 낙찰되어 큰 호응과 반향을 얻고 뉴욕화단 뿐만 아니라 세계미술시장에서도 언제나 강한 인상과 관심을 끊임없이 받고 있습니다. 이는 김 웅 선생님만이 갖고 계신 작업에 대한 강한 집념과 열정이 낳은 당연한 결과라 말할 수 있습니다.
