INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1978, GALLERY YEH has been at the center of the history of Korean art galleries, introducing Korean Modern and Contemporary Art to the public. Starting from Insa-Dong - the cradle of Korean art galleries - GALLERY YEH moved to Gangnam in 1982, being the first gallery to open in the area. Central to the development of art and culture in downtown Gangnam, GALLERY YEH's contribution to the popularization of fine arts has influenced the establishment of "Garosu-gil" as a cultural icon for food, fashion, art, and design. GALLERY YEH seeks to start anew in Changdeokgung-gil, to vitalize the areas' artistic spirit. Apart from gallery exhibitions, GALLERY YEH has actively engaged in international exhibition curations, various collaboration projects, public artworks, etc. GALLERY YEH past 47 years have been an endless effort to advance Korean art, maximizing their expertise and dedication to art. Its future will also be marked by an endless effort to influence the global art scene along with artists of the highest caliber from both Korea and overseas.
1954년 이완석(b.1915~1969, 예화랑 설립자 故이숙영(b.1947~2010)의 아버지)이 설립한 천일화랑에 이어 1978년에 설립된 예화랑은 한국 갤러리의 역사와 함께 하며, 근 현대 미술사의 중요한 흐름을 보여 주고 있다. 갤러리 문화의 시발점이었던 인사동에서 출발하여 1982년 강남 지역에서는 처음으로 오픈 한 갤러리다. 서울 도심 속 강남 예술 문화의 시초를 연 예화랑은 1982년부터 2024년까지 문화, 패션, 푸드, 디자인의 중심이 된 “가로수길”이란 말이 있기 전부터 이곳에서 순수예술의 대중화를 위하여 노력해왔다. 현재 예화랑은 2025년부터 강북 ‘창덕궁길’에서 새로운 도약을 맞이하고 있다. 갤러리 전시 이외에도 영역의 넓혀 국제적인 전시 기획과 기업과의 다양한 컬래버레이션, 퍼블릭 아트 워크 등 다양한 활동을 하고 있다. 47년간 한결같이 한국 미술 발전을 위해 노력 해온 것처럼 앞으로도 전문성을 가지고 훌륭한 아티스트들과 함께 세계 문화에 영향을 일으킬 수 있도록 끊임없이 도전을 이루어 나갈 것이다.
1954 천일화랑
천일화랑은 1954년 7월 25일 서울 종로구 예지동에 이완석(1세대 산업미술가)에 의해 개관되었다. 첫 개관전 <현대미술작가전>은 이완석이 속해있던 대한미협 회원들을 망라하여 동양화 서양화 조각 분야로 40명의 작품 50여 점으로 전시를 구성하였다. 그리고 바로 뒤를 이어 6.25전쟁 기간과 직후 세상을 떠난 이인성(b.1912~1950) 구본웅(b. 1906~1953) 김중현(b.1901~1953)의 유작들을 모아 전시를 열었다.
이후, 현대화 5인 전람회( 김석민, 김흥수, 박영선, 변영원, 이경성), 현종석 서예전, 이림 개인전을 마지막으로 전시장은 문을 닫게 되지만 이는 이완석의 1964년 민예품 연구소로 이어지게 되고 또다시 그의 딸 이숙영과 사위 김태성에 의해 1978년 예화랑 설립으로 이어 지게 된다.
