Gallery Yeh is currently exhibiting the works of Korean contemporary artist Tongyull Chae. Vivid and primitivistic color palette of the artist suggests influences of Paul Gaugin’s impressionistic works at Tahiti that involve bold color. Brusque brushstrokes and symbolistic nature of his paintings negate narratives, further enticing the viewers by allowing them the freedom of interpretation. In his painting Sunflowers,
Nude and Nocturnal City 2 (2009, oil on canvas), a female nude in reclining pose is depicted with sunflowers larger than her, completely evacuating perspective and Classicism. Through this negation of depth and perspective, and by concentrating on flatness and simplification, Tongyull Chae portrays his subjects in such a way that deliberate contortion of matters ironically brings harmony. Tongyull Chae is a self-taught artist who went to New York in 1972 to participate in a variety of artistic activities. His professional artistic life began with the exhibition Instinctivists in New Orleans in 1978, and made a grand debut in Korean artistic world through a private exhibition in 1990 at the gallery of Chosun News. Tongyull Chae’s paintings with vivid color palettes that emulate nature successfully, will give the viewers nostalgia and freedom that characterize Paul Gaugin’s Primitivism.

2010년 5월의 푸르름과 강렬한 빛을 소원하는 계절입니다. 이 시간 저희 예화랑에서는 원색에 가까운 강렬한 색상. 마치 인상파 화가 폴 고갱의 그림을 보는 것 같은 착각이 드는 재미작가 ‘최동열’선생님의 개인전을 마련합니다.
거칠도록 운동감 있는 붓질에 주제의식을 분명하게 부각시키고 있는 그림들은 극도로 상징화된 인물과 사물들의 연작 입니다. 정밀묘사를 거부한 이미지들은 과연 무슨 이야기가 숨겨져 있을까 하는 호기심과 더불어 그림읽는 재미를 선사합니다. 선생님의 작품 속에는 사람보다 큰 꽃이나 빌딩보다 더 큰 도자기 등이 보이며 화면의 입체감이나 원근법 등은 이미 사라지고 고전적인 접근방식을 과감히 버립니다. 대신 사물을 평면화하고 단순화해 형태의 의도적 왜곡을 꾀했으며 도자기나 병 같은 그저 하나의 물건에 지나지 않는 정물과 꽃과 누드 같은 생명체들을 한 공간에 공존 시켜, 안과 밖 상황들을 연결시키는 구도를 재현합니다. 이러한 화면은 경쾌하고 자유로운 상상력을 유발시킵니다.
국내에서 독학으로 그림을 배워 72년도에 미국으로 건너가 지금까지 왕성하게 활동하는 작가는 다채로운 이력만큼이나 작품도 자유롭고 독특하다는 한국화단의 평입니다. 1978년 미국 뉴올리언스에서 ‘본능파’ 라는 그룹전에 참가하면서 본격적인 화가의 길을 걷기 시작, 우리나라에서는 90년 조선일보미술관에서 대규모 개인전을 연 이후 국내미술시장에도 이름을 내밀었습니다. 쉴새없이 달리는 현대도시인들의 삶에서 한국의 폴 고갱이라 불리는 진정한 자유예술인 ‘최동열 선생님’의 강렬한 색채의 작품들은 모든이에게 진정한 보헤미안의 자유로움을 선물 할 것입니다.
