Information
Kwon Ok-yeon is a painter who belongs to the 2nd generation of the contemporary painting of Korea. And is a one of the key members who brought best efforts in developing Korea's contemporary paintings. Successfully educated in both Paris and Tokyo, she has won several awards at the several exhibitions held at home and abroad including the exhibition in Saloon, Dotonre. In 1986, he won the prize of the Korea Academy Arts and was recommended as a member of Korea Academy Arts in 1983 and worked as a member of examination board for the national exhibitions. At present she is working in Paris. Her early works show primitive taste that inspired more lyric atmosphere of man made emotion. Her paintings express a thick sense of northern pattern that puts its bases in the wild field of sunset and magnificent scale through the colored scenes suppressed by the northern typed scales. It is her fundamental base that her work of practical pattern and sharp-edged ancestor's structure and the suppressed sweetish coloring tone are functioning as the basic element. After 1960s, interests about an imaginary world, a world of dreams and the world of unconsciousness plus surrealism, are widely exposed. We also can find her mysteriousness within the world where the mysterious phenomenons have been expressed through a suggestive way. And enabled us to taste far distant effect of an illusion. We would say that it is a function like an enchantment that carefully awakens the parts sitting behind the memory connecting to the origin of the unconsciousness world.
권옥연은 한국근대미술의 제2세대에 속한 작가이며, 이것을 이끌어 온 몇 안 되는 작가들 중 한 사람이다.
동경과 파리에서 수학하고 국전과 살롱 도톤느 등의 국내외 공모전에서 여러 차례 수상하였고 국전 심사위원원 등 여러 단체의 운영위원으로 활동하였으며 1983년 대한민국 예술원 회원으로 추대되었고 1986년 예술원상을 수상하였다. 현재 파리에서 활동 중이다.
그의 초기작품은 자연과 인간이 만드는 풋풋한 정감으로 인해 더욱 서사시적 분위기를 고양시키는 원시적 체취가 강하게 배어 나오는 작품으로, 향토적 소재주의, 목가적 서정주의적인 작품이다. 그의 작품에는 북방적인 스케일과 억제된 톤에 의한 거대한 색면의 화면을 통하여 장대한 스케일과 황량한 들녘에 시점을 두고 있는 북방인의 정서가 나타나 있다. 사실적 화풍이면서도, 예리한 선조의 구성과 감미로우면서 억제된 색조의 톤(tone)은 그의 작품의 바닥에 흐르고 있는 기본적인 요소로 작용되고 있다.
1960년대 이후에는 초현실주의적 요소가 가미되어 상상의 세계, 꿈의 세계, 무의식의 세계에 대한 관심이 표현되고 있다. 그의 작품은 기이한 형상이 암시적으로 묘출되는 신비한 내면세계를 엿볼 수 있게 해주며, 먼 기억의 세계를 더듬는 독특한 환시작용을 발견할 수 있게 해준다. 그것은 단순한 개인적인 기억이기보다는 집단적인 무의식의 세계, 시원(始原)에 잇닿아 있는 아득한 기억의 저편을 조심스럽게 일깨워내는 주술과 같은 작용이라고 할 수 있다.
