Information
Pope.L is a visual artist and educator whose multidisciplinary practice uses binaries, contraries and preconceived notions embedded within contemporary culture to create art works in various formats, for example, writing, painting, performance, installation, video and sculpture. Building upon his long history of enacting arduous, provocative, absurdist performances and interventions in public spaces, Pope.L applies some of the same social, formal and performative strategies to his interests in language, system, gender, race and community. The goals for his work are several: joy, money and uncertainty— not necessarily in that order.

리차드 쁘띠봉 (1938 LA출생) 은 전유 예술의 선구자 중 한명이다. 쁘띠봉은 대중 문화가 팝 아트를 도용하는 것을 재사용 해서 80년대의 전유 예술의 무대를 마련했다. 그의 초기작들은 쉐도우박스 공정으로 이루어져 있는데 이는 그가 장난감 기차나 비행기 같은 프라모델에 관심이 많았음을 보여준다. 그가 로스 앤젤레스에서 거주하던 26세의 청년에 불과했던 1964년에 그는 앤디 워홀의 1962 그림 “Campbell Soup Can (Pepper Pot)” 을 작지만 정교하게 재현해냈으며, 하나는 초록색이고 하나는 회색으로 그려냈다. 이 두 작품 모두 앤디 워홀의 이름과 자신의 이름을 도장 찍어넣었다. 즉 그는 팝 아트와 후기-팝 아트를 하고 있었다. 마르셀 뒤샹과 앤디 워홀의 영향을 크게 받은 것으로 알려져 있다. 쁘띠봉은 1962년 로스 앤젤레스 Ferus Gallery 에서의 워홀의 첫 화랑전 (Campbell Soup Can 작품들로 이루어진) 과, 왈터 호프의 미국 최초의 전설적인 1963년 파사디나 미술 박물관 뒤샹 회고전에서 그들의 사상을 처음 접했다. 2005년에서 2006년 사이에는 대략 200개의 회화와 조각들을 선보인 회고전을 캘리포니아 라구나 해변의 라구나 미술 박물관, 스키드모어 대학의 프란시스 영 탱 티칭 박물관 등에서 열기도 했다.
