Seongyoun Koo uses candy to represent a very unique sense of peony flowers. Taking the motif of peony flowers from Korean folk painting “Moran-do”, she transforms colorful, sweet candy into an imaginary peony flower. And through the process of photography, the completed image becomes a folding screen from “Moran-do”.

  The aestheticist Sumi-Kang comments on her photographic effect as: “By exaggerating the ‘artistic gesture’, she borrows and copies the traditional and imaginary symbol to express the concepts she wants”.

  Both candy and flowers have innate fantastical elements. While it blooms a flower is illuminating and beautiful; a candy, likewise, is sweet yet it eventually melts away at the tip of the tongue. Similar to how desire fuels human existence, the fantastical elements and sweetness are what fuel and represent human desire.

  The peony flower and candy, which creates a process of mutual association, seduces the audience with glamor and sweetness. The artist takes the ordinary objects like flowers and candy and significates them into the desirous and symbolic images of contemporary society.

  The artist transforms the essence of “candy” and overthrows the traditional symbolism of “peony flowers” to appeal to her audience in her own methodology, with unique materials and subjectivity.

 구성연은 사탕을 소재로 아주 묘한 느낌의 ‘모란꽃’을 사진으로 재현한다. 우리민화의 ‘모란도’에서 모티프를 가져온 이번 작업은 형형색색의 달콤한 사탕이 그녀의 손작업을 거처 ‘상상세계의 모란꽃’으로 변한다. 그리고 다시 사진작업을 통해서 완성된 이미지는 민화의 모란도 병풍 한 폭으로 바뀐다.

미학자 강수미는 그녀의 사진 효과에 대해 “과잉된 ‘예술적 그 제스처’에 의해 전통의 상징적 기표를 차용 모방하여 자신이 표출하려는 다른 개념들을 표출시켜 낸다”고 평한다.

  사탕과 꽃은 특유의 황홀함이 있다. 피어있는 동안은 눈부시고 아름답지만 이내 지고 나면 자취도 없다. 사탕 역시 달콤하지만 결국 혀끝에서 녹아 없어진다. 욕망이 인간을 살아가게 하듯 황홀함과 달콤함은 현대인들의 욕망 표상이다.

  화려함과 달콤함으로 유혹하는 ‘모란’과 ‘사탕’은 상호연상 작용을 일어켜, 시대 산물이며 일상적 사물인 사탕 꽃이 새로운 의미체계로 구성, 우리시대 욕망적 기호 이미지로 재구성 되었다.

  작가는 ‘사탕’의 본질변형과 ‘모란’의 전통적 상징성을 전복시켜 그만의 방식으로 소재와 주제성을 가지고 우리들의 관심을 이끌고 있다.
