‘An artist who gazes into the space of the future’

  The most important theme of Dokyun Kim (also known as KDK), the photographer, is space. He creates a non-existent space from existing space. The Lanvin store in Ginza, Tokyo, the Sedus warehouse at the border of Germany and Switzerland, the parking lot at the Munich Airport, Missoni store at Chung-dam Dong, the Galleria Department store, and Leeum Samsung museum in Han-nam Dong were shot by his camera. The objects he captures are desirable to any photographers, and that means a lot of photographers has tried to capture the beauty of these places. Therefore, a simple photography of these places are no longer artistic. His angle, on the other hand, is so exquisite it makes us have a new perception of these places. In fact, most “space” exists. A camera cannot capture the non-existent. It is Dokyun Kim’s modern perspective that enables us to have a new perception of old, existing places. Such perspective of the artist was influenced by multiple multi-visual medias and his experience with it. He also uses the Photoshop prominently and with craftsmanship, enabling the existence to disappear and the non-existence to appear. What we face in his works is the unrealistic sense of spatiality from the future.

  “I want to be a mutant. Even if the objectivity in the New Objectivity movement (German: Neue Sachlichtkeit) persists, I want to exclude that excessive coldness and let my emotion and sentimentality surface,” he says.

‘미래의 공간을 바라보는 작가’ 

  사진작가 김도균의 가장 중요한 테마는 공간이다.  존재하는 공간에서 그는 존재하지 않는 공간을 창조해낸다. 도쿄 긴자의 랑방 매장, 독일-스위스 경계에 있는 세두스(Sedus) 사 창고, 독일 뮌헨공항의 주차장, 청담동의 미소니 매장 건물, 갤러리아 백화점, 한남동의 삼성 리움 등이 그의 카메라에 포착되었다. 그가 찍은 소재는 사진작가라면 누구나 탐낼 만한 소재이며 누구든지 찍을 수 있는 대상이다. 그래서 그것을 단순하게 찍는 것은 더 이상 사진예술이 아니다. 그런데 그가 바라보는 시선과 포착하는 위치가 너무나 절묘해서 이 공간들에 새로운 인식을 갖게 된다. 사실 모든 공간은 존재한다. 카메라는 존재하지 않는 것을 찍을 수 없다. 그런데 이 공간에 대해 새로운 인식을 가능하게 하는 것은 김도균만의 21세기적인 시각이다. 이 시각은 철저히 여러 시각적 체험의 미디어들에 영향을 받은 것이다. 또한 그는 최신의 테크닉인 포토샵을 자유롭게 사용하는데, 포토샵은 존재하는 것을 사라지게 하고, 또 부재를 존재하게 만든다. 그의 작품을 통해 맞닥뜨리게 되는 것은 비현실적인 미래의 공간감이다.
 “나는 돌연변이가 되고 싶다. 신즉물주의 형식의 객관성이 유지된다 하더라도 그 지나친 차가움을 배제하고 내 감수성과 감정이 드러나길 바란다”고 말한다.
