Young-hak Lee was born in 1948 in Gimhae, graduated from Seoul National University College of Fine Arts in 1979, and went to Italy for 6 years for his studies in Accademia Belle Arti di Roma Scuola della Arti Ornamentali. He was awarded a special selection in Donga Art Award and Choongang Art Award as well as 6 times in national award. He has had 12 exhibitions in total, including the Roma Galleria Porto di Ripetta, GALLERY YEH, Gallery Pyo and Young-duk Park Gallery, etc.

  He also exhibited at the International Sculpture Exhibition in Spain (1984), Chicago Art Fair (1995), and Miami International Art Exhibition (1996). He has made public sculptures for the headquarters of the Water Security Command (1976, a sculpture for their loyalty), the inside assistance of the Seon Gyeong Library in Suwon (1994), the Iron Buddha of the Gangnam Fortress (1996). Now he is working on Dae-geon Kim's Martyr statue. After graduating from college in 1976, he steadily exhibited at the National Art Exhibition and the Modern Space Society. In 1979, he held his first solo exhibition "Apples Series" and "Works Series". The preface of Lee Il in the catalog of his first solo exhibition gives a clearer picture of Lee Young-hak's work at that time:

  “His series of works, in which casted (melted metal poured into a mold) apples are attached to natural stones, show an incongruous combination of materials of stones and apples and the mineralized apples and natural stones are surely very interesting […] His work can usually be summarized into two methodologies. One is the attachment of several natural stones, and the other is the partial grinding of individual natural stones.”

Just as his methodology of communicating with matter reveals, his works never unilaterally present a monologue of formativity. Whether he intended or not, his works have rich narratives. Perhaps that is why his works stimulate people's desire to have loose conversations with them.

It is only a materialization of life to remain in the “entertainment” phase when reviewing Young-hak Lee’s works wherein a burned metal sickle becomes a stork, and a burned metal shovel becomes a tiger through his craftsmanship. If you endow life to materials, it is not a “thing” anymore. The pleasure that life gives us is an implication of something seemingly meaningful that lies beyond the smile.

  이영학은 1948년 경상남도 김해 출생하여 1979 서울대학교 미술대학 조소과 졸업하고 이탈리아에서 6년간 유학(Accademia Belle Arti di Roma Scuola della Arti Ornamentali)했다. 국전 6회 입선, 동아미술대상전, 중앙미술대상전에서 특선했고, Roma Galleria Porto di Ripetta 전시회를 포함, 국내의 예 화랑, 표 화랑, 박영덕 화랑 등에서 모두 12회의 개인전을 가졌다.

  그리고 스페인 국제소형조각전(1984), 시카고 아트페어(1995), 마이아미 국제미술전시(1996)에도 출품했다. 공공조각으로 수도경비사령부 충정상(1976), 수원 선경도서관 내부부조(1994), 강남포교원 철불상(1996), 이중섭 거리이름 기념비(1997)등을 제작했고, 현재는 신축중인 바티칸소재 한국성당을 위해 김대건 순교자상을 만들고 있다. 대학을 졸업하던 1976년을 전후해서 국전과 현대 공간회에 꾸준히 출품했고, 1979년 「사과 연작」과 「작품 연작」으로 첫 개인전을 열었다. 이 첫 개인전의 카탈로그에 실린 이일(李逸)의 서문은 당시 이영학의 작품세계를 비교적 선명히 해설해 주고 있다.

  자연석에다가 주물(鑄物)로 뜬 사과를 부착시킨 그의 일련의 작품은 돌과 사과라는 이질적인 재료의 결합과, 광물화(鑛物化)된 사과 아닌 사과와 자연석과의 관련의 양의성(兩義性)이 매우 흥미 있는 것으로 느껴졌다…. 그의 작업은 대체로 두 가지로 압축될 수 있다. 그 하나는 몇 개의 자연석끼리의 부착이요, 다른 하나는 낱개의 자연석을 부분적으로 마광(磨光)하는 작업이다.

  물질과 교감하는 그의 작업 방식에서도 드러났듯이, 그가 만들어낸 작품들은 결코 독백형으로 이루어진 조형성을 일방적으로 제시하지 않는다. 그가 의도했든 그렇지 않았건 간에, 그의 작품들은 풍부한 서술성을 갖고 있다. 그래서 그의 작품들은 보는 사람들로 하여금 그네들과 헐렁한 대화를 나누고 싶다는 욕망을 자극하는 지도 모른다.

  쓰다 버린 쇠붙이 낫이 이영학을 거쳐 황새가 되고, 쓰다 버린 쇳조각 부손이 그의 손을 거쳐 호랑이가 되는 형상(形象) 앞에서 감흥에만 머물러서는 목숨을 물건 취급하는 것밖에 안 된다. 물건을 목숨으로 돌리면 이미 그것은 물건이 아니다. 목숨이 던지는 반가움은 웃음 너머에 숨어 있는 '허정'의 '기미'이다.
