Information
Jungwha Cho is a female sculptor who works on a character that everyone can sympathize with. She copies a person who gets societal attention, a celebrity who stands in the popularity or interest of the public, a character who is remembered as a memorable figure in a literary magnum opus or a masterpiece film, and a portrait of a princess in a fairy tale. The reproduction of such celebrities has been seen in museums and amusement parks for some time, but Jungwha Cho stands out in a sense that these reproductions seem to have not undergone a particularly subtle sublimation. The clone humanoids have an inevitable artificial effect brought by the synthetic resin, and as a result the unnatural and limited faces are produced. The unnaturality of the humanoids suggests that the rendezvous with actual celebrities or characters that the audience dreams of is only a fiction. It reminds us that the material itself is a symbol of kitschy sensibility and deviates from its basic context in the state of losing its original liveliness and meaning and faces the visitors. "I wanted to give people pleasure with the work I do," the sculptor says. We look at the work together with the artist's words that tell us the direction of the work in a short and clear way, and we think about the relationship between the real and the fiction which lost meaning.
모든 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 인물을 대상으로 작품을 하는 여류 조각가 조정화는 사회적 이슈가 되는 인물, 대중의 인기나 관심 속에 서 있는 유명인, 명서나 명화 속에서 잊을 수 없는 모습으로 기억되는 배우, 동화 속에 나오는 공주의 인물상 등 다양한 인물들을 복제한다. 이러한 유명인의 모습을 복제하는 행위는 지금까지 박물관이나 놀이 유원지 등에서 때때로 보아왔지만, 조정화의 복제는 특별히 미적인 승화를 거치지 않은 듯이 보인다는 것이 전시공간에 위치한 조정화 조각작품의 특징이다. 그녀의 손을 거쳐간 복제인간형들은 어쩔 수 없이 폴리코트(합성수지)가 가져오는 인위적인 효과로 부자연스럽고 제한된 얼굴들은 실제에 가깝지만 관객들로 하여금 꿈에도 바라던 실제 유명인이나 캐릭터와의 만남이 ‘허구’임을 드러냅니다. 복제하고 있는 소재 자체가 키치적 감성의 상징물임을 일깨워 주고 일탈하여 본래적인 생동감과 의미를 상실한 상태로 그 기본 맥락에서 일탈하여 관람객과 마주한다. ‘내가 하는 작업으로 인하여 사람들에게 즐거움을 주고 싶었다’라고 짧고 명쾌하게 본인의 작업 방향을 말하는 작가의 말과 함께 작품을 보면서 우리는 의미를 상실한 실제와 허구의 관계에 대해서 다시 한번 생각하게 된다.
