Bradley Narduzzi Rex
브레들리 나르두지 렉스 (b.1967)
Information
Rex originally studied architecture before moving into the areas of fine arts, particularly mural painting. Therefore, most of his works demonstrate some types of affinity with architecture or parts of building a structure. The smooth, yet unclear and old-looking color effects of his painting remind the fresco paintings of the medieval or Renaissance painting as he also studied architecture in Venice. Simultaneously, he devised the unique method of combining a number of vertical canvases to tight up from the back. The idea resonates with the fragmentary and intransient vision of the urban landscape. Like our vision consistently stimulated by the incoherent urban spectacle, his painting consists of thin layers of different scene-from the image of street signs to poster randomly attached on the city walls. The fresco-like painting and the theme of contemporary signage shows an interesting amalgam of the old and new sensibilities.
1998년 멕시코 시티로 옮겨 간 후 미국과 멕시코를 오가면서 활동을 벌이고 있는 미국 출신의 작가 브래들리 나르두지 렉스는 다양한 장소성, 매체, 그리고 문화를 아우르는 작가이다. 원래 미국 코네티컷 주에서 출생한 후 1980년대 후반 뉴욕 콜롬비아 대학의 건축학과와 1992년 구겐하임 장학금으로 베니스 건축학교(Tolentini)를 졸업한 렉스는 건축가의 시점에서 2차원적인 평면을 접근한다. 그의 초기 작업들이 주로 버려진 건물이나 거리의 벽면에서 발견될 법한 일종의 낙서들로 이루어진 것도 이와 같은 연유에서이다.
건축, 영화, 회화, 판화 등의 다양한 분야에서 왕성한 활동을 벌이고 있는 렉스는 멕시코 현대미술관에서 여러 차례 전시를 가져왔다. 2007년 멕시코 Monterry에서 열린 La VIII Bienal De Monterrey(비엔날레)에도 초대되었고, 멕시코 Quertetaro에 위치한 스테이트 뮤지엄에서 열린 “19th Anniversary Contemporary Art”에도 참여했으며, 뉴욕 Amory에서 열린 “Art 20, International Art Fair”등 여러 비엔날레와 아트페어에 초대되어 참여해왔다. 렉스는 주로 미국, 멕시코, 그리고 이태리를 주요한 활동 무대로 삼아 오고 있다.
렉스의 그림에서는 거대하고 연속적인 이미지 대신에 단편적이고 다양한 이미지들이 공존한다. 비교적 알아보기 쉬운 인물상, 공들여져서 그려진 표현주의적인 풍경 옆에는 낙서와 같이 선들로만 윤곽이 지어진 간략한 이미지들이 등장한다. 반복적으로 화살표와 같이 추상적인 문양이 화면에 그득하다. 뿐만 아니라 구상적이고 추상적인 이미지의 단면들은 하나의 캔버스가 아니라 길게 잘려진 여러 개의 캔버스 위에 등장한다. 작가는 스쳐가는 도시의 풍경이나 벽에서 발견되는 단편적인 이미지들을 길고 좁은 각각의 캔버스에 따로 담고 병치시킴으로써 거대한 하나의 작품을 완성시킨다. 결과적으로 그의 작업은 서로 다른 이미지들을 담은 캔버스들의 복합체인 샘이다.
그는 잊혀져 가거나 재개발되어 가는 소위 도시의 버려진 공간들을 주된 대상으로 삼는다. 그러므로 그의 작업은 도시의 환경에서 발견되는 이미지뿐 아니라 그것들의 흔적들도 함께 수용한다. 이러한 과정에서 실크 스크린, 스텐실, 수채화, 유화, 아크릴릭 물감, 펜 등의 다양한 매체들은 시간적인 추이에 따라서 겹쳐지고 덧칠해진 도시의 환경을 재현해 내는 데에 있어 효과적이다.
